Description: Defined by the Housing and Community Development Department of Augusta Richmond County. An enterprise zone is a designated geographic area within a city or county where there is an organized effort to revitalize economic development of the community. They provides tax incentives and other incentives to encourage new growth in businesses and housing. Augusta is able to provide these incentives through the Georgia Enterprise Zone Employment Act of 1997. Zones are first designated as Enterprise Zones by local ordinance. After a year of Enterprise Zone designation, the zone becomes an Opportunity Zone. An Opportunity Zone designation is done at the state level by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA)(Source: Augusta Economic Development Authority & the City of Augusta Planning & Development Department)Harrisburg & Laney Walker Opportunity Zones: Designated May 28, 2010. Designation period: 2010 through 2020.Rocky Creek: Opportunity Zone expired in 2012. No longer an Enterprise or Opportunity Zone (Per Planning & Development).
